This species is rare. It is arboreal and it inhabits shrublands and tropical forests in the Western Ghats of India (mainly in Karnataka and Maharashtra), at altitudes ranging from 400m to 1,300m asl.

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and currently, the population size is unknown. Its Extent of Occurrence is less than 20,000 sq km, with severely fragmented distribution. It used to be common species in localities of Maharashtra, but in some districts of Pune it has declined. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to infrastructure, tourism, logging, and other human encroachments.
