This species is rare. It inhabits tropical evergreen and deciduous forests and some non-timber plantations of southern Western Ghats of India (commonly found in localities of Ponmudi Hills, Wayanad,and Silent Valley in Kerala, and Saklespur in Karnataka), at the heights of 300m - 950m asl.

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and its current population size is unknown. Its Extent of Occurrence is less than 20,000 sq km, with severely fragmented distribution. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to forest clearance for plantation and urbanization.
