This endemic species is very rare. It inhabits inland wetlands and tropical evergreen forests of the southern Western Ghats of India (mainly Sriviliputhur, Indira Gandhi National Park, and Mudhanthurai Tiger reserve in Tamil Nadu, and Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, Ponmudi hills, and Athirimala in Kerala), at the heights of 600m - 1,000m asl.

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and its current population size is unknown. Its Extent of Occurrence is less than 5,000 sq km with a severely fragmented distribution. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to agriculture, timber extraction, and commercial developments.
