This arboreal species is very rare. It inhabits inland wetlands and montane tropical moist forests of the southern Western Ghats of India (mainly in Kerala's Agasthyamala hills and Tamil Nadu's Kalakkad-Mudanthurai), at the heights ranging between 900m - 1,400m asl.

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).
According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and its population size is currently unknown. Its Extent of Occurrence is less than 5,000 sq km, with a severely fragmented distribution. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat degradation due to large-scale agriculture.
