This largely aquatic species is rare. It inhabits hill streams and riparian habitats of wet tropical evergreen forests of northeast India (mainly Assam, Arunachal, and Nagaland) at elevations ranging between 200m - 1,600m asl. Its existence was also reported in Manipur but its details are less known.

Its Extent of Occurrence is less than 20,000 sq km with a harshly fragmented distribution. The major threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to water pollution by toxins.
