This semi-aquatic species is very rare. It inhabits the marsh and tropical moist forests of the Western Ghats of India (mainly in Karnataka's Kudremukh National Park, Shimoga, and Kemphole Ghats), at the heights of 2,000m asl.

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining and its current population size is unknown. Its Extent of Occurrence is less than 5,000 sq km. Major threats to its survival are habitat degradation due to agriculture and logging. Another major threat is mining and quarrying in Kudremukh.
