This species is uncommon. It inhabits the inland wetlands and forests of Yunnan Province in China at elevations ranging between 1,000m - 2,080m asl. It is sparsely populated in northern regions of Myanmar (at 910m asl) and currently, its presence is uncertain in India.

Major threats to its survival in Myanmar come from human encroachments like hunting and logging. In China, threats to its persistence come from habitat fragmentation due to large-scale agriculture and wood harvesting.
