This species is rare. It inhabits inland wetlands and tropical forests of the southern Western Ghats of India (mainly in the Nilgiris, Eravikulam National Park in Kerala, and Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu), at the heights of 300m - 1,400m asl.
This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and its current population size is unknown. Its Extent of Occurrence is less than 20,000 sq km, with a severely fragmented distribution. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to deforestation for agriculture and other human encroachments like wood or timber extraction.
