This semi-arboreal and semi-aquatic species is rare. It inhabits the inland wetlands and swamps in tropical moist forests of Sri Lanka and India (mainly southern Western Ghats), at heights ranging between 200m - 1,400m asl.

Conservation Status:

This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining,and its current population size is unknown. Its Extent of Occurrence is less than 20,000 Sq km with severely fragmented distribution. The threats to its persistence come from habitat disturbances due to large-scale agricuture, agrochemical pollution, and mining.
