Ghatixalus variabilis - Green Tree Frog



This endemic species is very rare. It inhabits the inland wetlands and montane sholas at high altitudes (1,900m - 2,630m asl) in the southern Western Ghats of India (mainly in the Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu).

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is stable. Currently, its population size is unknown. Its Extent of Occurrence is less than 5,000 sq km where all individuals present in severely fragmented locations. The threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to large scale agriculture, logging, and urbanization.
