This species is uncommon. It inhabits inland wetlands and tropical forests in the Western Ghats of India, at the heights of 500m- 2,000m asl.

This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/)

According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining, and its current population size is unknown. Its Extent of Occurrence is not much greater than 20,000 sq km. The primary threat to its persistence comes from habitat disturbance due to agriculture and wood harvesting. Another threat to this species is getting roadkilled during migration.
